Six things this falcon teaches
1 · The notched beak
The small step in the upper beak. Only falcons carry it, and a falconer looks for it before anything else.
2 · Eyes built for the dive
Roughly eight times sharper than ours, and set forward, because a bird falling at speed must judge distance.
3 · The head is its name
Streaks on a pale crown mean a saker — al-hurr. Other falcons have different heads.
4 · The spots are camouflage
Teardrops on a white breast, heavier at the flanks. Against desert light from below, the bird breaks up and disappears.
5 · Three feathers, three jobs
Short ones keep it warm, middle ones smooth the air over the wing, long ones do the flying.
6 · The foot is a tool
Three toes forward, one back, talons for holding. The foot the falconer's glove exists for.
